| This is my first version of an oak slat trunk, (more to come). Everything on this trunk is recycled except for the new leather handles and the metal band around the lid. Reproduction hardware for trunks is on the rise but will never have the charm of the old worn down stuff that I've used here.Years of collecting old trunks has provided me with thousands of pieces of irreplaceable, hard to find hardware; much of which is not being reproduced. The lock is from the Eagle Lock Co. circa 1890, works like a charm and comes with a key. The latches and the slat clamps are even older, from the 1880s and the corner brackets are from a rugged old trunk from early 1900. All of it is authentic and considered antique. I used an old trunk shell and lined the outside with 1/4 inch solid oak. The only reproduction items I did use were the new trunk nails to put it all together, hundreds of them. |

| Any of the oak slat trunks that I'm familiar with were made by Excelsior. Some were a full dome top and others were slightly rounded. To my knowledge, none were flat tops. I wanted to make use of some of the thousands of pieces of old hardware I've collected over the years to produce my own style of an oak slat trunk but more practical to today's needs and use of old trunks. This one was custom designed to serve as a coffee table with lots of flat surface between the two main slats. |
